Assortative Mating and Divorce: Evidence from Austrian Register Data

چکیده
We show that changes in assortative mating patterns along the dimensions of age, ethnicity, religion and education are not responsible for the increasing marital instability over the last four decades in Austria. Without the rise in the age at marriage, divorce rates would be considerably higher. Immigration and secularization, and the resulting supply of spouses with diverse ethnicity and religious denominations had no overall e ect on divorce rates. Countervailing e ects in line with theoretical predictions o set each other. The rise in the incidence in divorce is most probably caused by increased social acceptance of divorce. No evidence for size-assortative mating in the wild despite mutual mate choice in sex-role-reversed pipefishes
Size-assortative mating is a nonrandom association of body size between members of mating pairs and is expected to be common in species with mutual preferences for body size. In this study, we investigated whether there is direct evidence for size-assortative mating in two species of pipefishes, Syngnathus floridae and S. typhle, that share the characteristics of male pregnancy, sex-role revers...
متن کاملSpousal concordance for alcohol dependence: evidence for assortative mating or spousal interaction effects?
BACKGROUND Alcohol dependence (AD) is among the most common psychiatric disorders, and impacts the health and well-being of problem drinkers, their family members, and society as a whole. Although previous research has consistently indicated that genetic factors contribute to variance in risk for AD, little attention has been paid to nonrandom mating for AD. When assortative mating occurs for a...
متن کاملReconsidering the heritability of general cognitive ability in adults: taking into account assortative mating and cultural transmission
AbstRAct Heritability estimates of general cognitive ability in adulthood generally range from 75% to 85%, with all heritability due to additive genetic influences, while genetic dominance and shared environmental factors are absent or too small to be detected. These estimates are derived from studies based on the classical twin design (CTD) and are based on the assumption of random mating amon...
متن کاملBirth weight and family status revisited: evidence from Austrian register data.
In this paper, we study the socio-economic determinants of birth weight, with a focus on the mother's family status. We use Austrian birth register data covering all births between 1984 and 2007 and find that a mother's marriage is associated with a higher birth weight of the newborn, in the range of 40 to 60 g. The significant impact is retained if we include mother fixed effects or use an ins...
متن کاملIncome inequality and educational assortative mating: Evidence from the Luxembourg Income Study.
Though extensive research has explored the prevalence of educational assortative mating, what causes its variation across countries and over time is not well understood. Using data from the Luxembourg Income Study Database, I investigate the hypothesis that assortative mating by income is influenced by income inequality between educational strata. I find that in countries with greater returns t...
